**Mumbai, February 18, 2025** – Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed the state cyber police to contact Wikipedia and request the removal of content deemed “objectionable” regarding Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The move follows concerns raised by various organizations in the state about allegedly inaccurate historical information on the online encyclopedia.
The Chief Minister’s statement comes on the heels of the recent release of the Hindi film “Chhaava,” which portrays Sambhaji Maharaj’s life. Fadnavis emphasized that the state will not tolerate the distortion of historical facts on open-source platforms. While acknowledging Wikipedia’s international nature and volunteer-based editorial process, he stated that the state will seek the implementation of regulations to prevent such inaccuracies.
Fadnavis also addressed broader concerns about social media regulation, highlighting the challenges posed by jurisdictional limitations and the need for collaboration with the Union government. He clarified that freedom of expression is not absolute and that action can be taken against content that crosses the line into obscenity. Furthermore, he issued a warning against the unauthorized pre-release sharing of cabinet agenda documents, threatening action against those responsible.
