**New Delhi** – The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a plea by alleged conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar to be transferred from Mandoli Jail in Delhi to a prison outside the state, labeling his repeated attempts as an “abuse of the process of law.”
Chandrasekhar, currently incarcerated on charges of money laundering and cheating, had requested a transfer to a jail in Karnataka or a nearby state, citing concerns about his safety and the need to be closer to his family. He claimed to be under constant surveillance in Mandoli Jail and alleged that his complaints against Delhi officials were being used to pressure him. His lawyer highlighted the fact that Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena had recommended a CBI probe into former minister Satyendra Jain based on Chandrasekhar’s allegations. Chandrasekhar even stated a preference to avoid jails in Delhi and Punjab, where the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is in power, claiming political motivations behind his alleged persecution.
However, the Supreme Court bench, comprising Justices Bela M Trivedi and P B Varale, noted that similar pleas had been previously rejected. They pointed out that his grievances were directed at the Delhi government and, with a change in administration, those grievances no longer held the same weight. The bench emphasized that Chandrasekhar’s actions constituted a misuse of the legal process and that his fundamental rights could not be prioritized at the expense of public safety. They further noted the serious allegations Chandrasekhar had leveled against government officers.
The court’s decision follows a previous ruling last year that dismissed a similar plea by Chandrasekhar and his wife. Chandrasekhar’s accusations include allegations of extortion and claims that he contributed significant funds to the AAP, accusations that were deemed unfounded by the court. While the Supreme Court did not rule on the merits of Chandrasekhar’s claims, they firmly rejected his attempt to transfer jails based on what they termed a strategic manipulation of the legal system.
