Sun Feb 16 19:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Izzo Surpasses Knight, Claims Record-Breaking 354th Big Ten Victory

**CHAMPAIGN, IL** – Michigan State Spartans head coach Tom Izzo etched his name into Big Ten history on Saturday night, securing his 354th conference victory and surpassing the legendary Bob Knight’s long-standing record of 353. The win, a hard-fought 79-65 comeback against the Illinois Fighting Illini, came just days after a disappointing loss to Indiana.

Trailing by 16 points in the first half, the Spartans showcased remarkable resilience, outscoring Illinois 42-24 in the second half to secure the historic victory. Izzo, visibly emotional, described the win as a testament to his team’s character following their earlier defeat. “You talk about the highest of highs and the lowest of lows,” he stated. “To pick ourselves off the ground after that loss and win in this environment was incredible.”

The game held added significance for Izzo, who had tied Knight’s record earlier this month. The win also marked a special moment for freshman Jase Richardson, son of former Spartan star Jason Richardson, who scored 11 points in his father’s presence. Richardson became the first son of a former Michigan State player to play under Izzo.

Illinois coach Brad Underwood, a friend of Izzo’s, graciously acknowledged the Spartans’ achievement. Former Illinois star Terrence Shannon Jr. even visited the Michigan State locker room to congratulate Izzo after the game, a gesture Izzo called “classy.”

Izzo, celebrating his recent 70th birthday, now boasts a remarkable 354-173 Big Ten record across 30 seasons. His overall coaching record stands at 727-300 since taking the helm at Michigan State in 1995. Despite the milestone, Izzo remained humble, stating he’d trade the record for more NCAA tournament championships. His impressive career includes 26 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, eight Final Four appearances, and numerous Big Ten titles.
