**Kochi, Kerala – February 17, 2025** – More than 800 schools and colleges in Ernakulam district, Kerala, have received top “A+/A” green ratings from the Haritha Keralam Mission (HKM). This achievement is part of the HKM’s ‘Navakeralam’ project, recognizing institutions for their commitment to environmental sustainability.
The assessment, conducted up to February 15th, evaluated schools and colleges based on various criteria including waste management (solid, e-waste, and organic), cleanliness, adherence to green protocols, water and energy conservation, and rainwater harvesting. Many participating institutions implemented initiatives such as green islets, biogas plants, solar panels, and separate waste bins for different materials. Educational programs and workshops were also conducted to promote awareness and compliance.
A total of 794 schools and 48 colleges successfully met the stringent requirements, demonstrating a significant commitment to environmental responsibility within the educational sector. The initiative highlights Kerala’s proactive approach to sustainable practices and the successful integration of green initiatives into educational institutions.
