Sun Feb 16 17:38:36 UTC 2025: ## AI Therapist? Study Shows ChatGPT Rivals Human Counselors in Couples Therapy Scenarios

**COLUMBUS, OH** – A groundbreaking study published in PLOS Mental Health suggests that artificial intelligence, specifically ChatGPT, may be just as effective as human therapists in providing couples counseling. Researchers from Ohio State University and Hatch Data and Mental Health presented AI-generated and therapist-generated responses to 830 participants, who were then asked to identify the author of each response.

The results revealed that participants struggled to distinguish between the AI and human responses, correctly identifying the therapist only 56.1% of the time and ChatGPT 51.2% of the time. In fact, ChatGPT’s responses were frequently rated higher for incorporating key psychotherapy principles, particularly in demonstrating empathy, understanding the speaker, and displaying cultural competence.

One example highlighted a scenario where a partner confessed to infidelity. While the therapist offered a sympathetic, “I’m sorry you’re having this experience,” ChatGPT’s response focused on managing emotions and improving communication, acknowledging the weight of the secret and its impact.

The study authors emphasize that this is an early indication of AI’s potential to augment, not replace, human therapists. They suggest that integrating AI into therapeutic settings may be inevitable and that mental health professionals should familiarize themselves with machine learning to effectively utilize these tools. The researchers stress the importance of careful training and supervision of AI models by clinicians to ensure high-quality care. The researchers concluded that if AI cannot currently achieve parity with human therapists, it will likely do so in the near future.
