Mon Feb 17 14:12:20 UTC 2025: ## Nepali Student’s Death Sparks Protests at KIIT University, Hundreds Evacuated

**Bhubaneswar, India** – A 20-year-old Nepali engineering student, Prakriti Lamsal, was found dead in her hostel room at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar on Sunday, sparking protests and the evacuation of hundreds of Nepali students. Police have detained a male batchmate, who is being questioned in connection with the incident and is facing charges of abetment to suicide.

While police suggest a prima facie case of suicide, Nepali students blocked roads near the campus, alleging the university failed to address harassment complaints made by Lamsal to the International Relations Office. KIIT authorities, however, claim the death stemmed from a strained personal relationship.

Following the incident, KIIT issued a statement confirming the police involvement and the detention of a male student believed to have been in a relationship with the deceased. The university subsequently ordered all Nepali students to leave the campus immediately, leading to the evacuation of over 500 students. They were transported to various railway stations and sent home.

Although the university claims the situation has returned to normal after discussions with the students, the incident has raised concerns about student safety and the handling of harassment complaints within the institution. Police are continuing their investigation. The unrelated final paragraph about Raj Kapoor has been omitted as it is irrelevant to this news story.
