NEW YORK, NY – The Tri-state area is bracing for the most impactful winter storm of a recent series this weekend, with a potent mix of snow, ice, and rain expected to create hazardous travel conditions. Winter weather advisories are in effect from Central Jersey to the Hudson Valley.
The storm will begin as snow Saturday afternoon, with temperatures below freezing across the region. While South Jersey will transition to rain by early evening, New York City and Long Island will see a changeover to mixed precipitation and rain later in the evening. The Hudson Valley can expect snow to continue into the night, with the addition of sleet and freezing rain. Ice accumulation of up to two-tenths of an inch is possible in the Hudson Valley, potentially causing power outages.
Snow accumulations are forecast to be less than an inch along the Jersey Shore. New York City, Long Island, and northern New Jersey are expected to receive 1 to 3 inches, with 3 to 5 inches possible further north. Sunday will bring widespread rain, turning accumulated snow into slush. Heavy rain and even thunder are possible in South Jersey and Long Island Sunday afternoon. The storm is expected to clear out Sunday evening.
The storm is projected to bring 1 to 2 inches of liquid equivalent precipitation, roughly half of which will fall as rain. While the much-needed rainfall will help alleviate moderate to severe drought conditions, there is a risk of isolated flooding in low-lying areas.
Following the storm, the region will experience a brief period of sunny skies early next week, but temperatures will plummet to below freezing, with highs in the teens and single digits Fahrenheit expected.
