**New Delhi, February 16, 2025** – India currently boasts over 29,500 registered drones, with Delhi leading the pack, according to data released by the Ministry of Civil Aviation. The national capital has registered 4,882 drones, followed by Tamil Nadu (4,588) and Maharashtra (4,132). These figures, updated to January 29th and shared with the Rajya Sabha, were revealed by Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol.
Other states with significant drone registrations include Haryana (3,689), Karnataka (2,516), Telangana (1,928), Gujarat (1,338), and Kerala (1,318). The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued 96 Type Certificates for various drone models, 65 of which are designated for agricultural use. Each drone is given a unique identification number via the DGCA’s Digital Sky Platform.
Furthermore, the DGCA has authorized Remote Pilot Training Organisations (RPTOs) to issue Remote Pilot Certificates (RPCs), with a total of 22,466 issued to date. The government has actively promoted drone technology, including a significant August 2024 amendment that eliminated the passport requirement for drone registration, de-registration, and transfer. Now, a Voter ID, ration card, or driving license suffices.
India’s drone airspace is categorized into green, yellow, and red zones, dictating the level of permission needed for operation. Green zones require no prior permission, yellow zones necessitate Air Traffic Control approval, and red zones demand Central government authorization.
