NEW DELHI – At least 18 people, including four children and 10 women, died and 10 more were injured in a deadly crush at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday night. Thousands attempting to board delayed trains became trapped in an overwhelming crowd.

The incident occurred as many travelers were heading to or returning from the Kumbh Mela religious festival in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Witnesses described an uncontrollable surge of people at the station, exacerbated by delays affecting at least two trains, including one bound for Prayagraj. One witness, Umesh Giri, tragically lost his wife in the crush.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways) KPS Malhotra stated that authorities are investigating the cause of the crush, attributing it to the delays and subsequent large crowd gathering. However, opposition leaders, such as Rahul Gandhi, have criticized the government for inadequate crowd management given the large number of pilgrims traveling to Prayagraj.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the victims’ families on X. The tragedy comes weeks after a similar crush at the Kumbh Mela resulted in 30 deaths. This latest incident highlights the recurring issue of overcrowding at Indian railway stations and public events.
