KOLKATA, INDIA (February 16, 2025) – Kolkata police are investigating two separate ATM-related crimes that occurred over the weekend. In the first incident, a man, Arupjyoti Pradhan, lost ₹1.3 lakh (approximately $15,700 USD) in an ATM fraud at an SBI ATM in Survey Park on Friday night. After his card was swallowed by the machine, a fraudulent call instructed him to enter his PIN and cancel the transaction. Subsequently, multiple unauthorized debits of ₹10,000 each were made from his account before he could secure his remaining funds.

The second incident involved a break-in at an SBI ATM in Howrah early Saturday morning. Miscreants used a gas cutter to access the ATM’s vault, resulting in a fire when electrical wires were ignited. Howrah Police Commissioner Praveen Kumar Tripathi confirmed the recovery of the vehicle used in the crime, along with tools including the gas cutter. The perpetrators have been identified and are expected to be apprehended shortly, though the exact amount of money stolen remains unconfirmed. Police believe the vehicle was stolen before the ATM robbery. Investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
