Sun Feb 16 07:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Government Offices Closed Monday for Presidents Day
**WASHINGTON D.C. –** Federal government offices will be closed this Monday, February 17th, in observance of Presidents Day. While commonly perceived as a celebration of all U.S. presidents, the holiday’s origins lie in Washington’s Birthday, honoring George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Initially designated in 1885 to commemorate Washington’s February 22nd birthday, the Uniform Monday Holiday Law of 1971 shifted the date to the third Monday of February for federal employees, creating the now-familiar Presidents Day. The shift in date to the third Monday in February placed it between the birthdays of both Washington and Lincoln (February 12th), contributing to its current name.
The closure will also affect the U.S. Postal Service, banks, and stock markets. However, most retail establishments, including grocery stores and restaurants, will maintain normal operating hours. The remaining federal holidays for 2025 will be announced later by the Office of Personnel Management.
