Thu Feb 13 03:03:22 UTC 2025: ## North Korea Demolishes Inter-Korean Family Reunion Facility, Raising Tensions

**Seoul, South Korea –** North Korea is dismantling a facility at the Mount Kumgang resort used for reunions of families separated by the Korean War, South Korea’s Unification Ministry announced Thursday. The ministry strongly condemned the demolition, calling it an “anti-humanitarian act” that disregards the wishes of separated families. South Korea is considering legal action and a joint response with the international community.

This latest action further escalates tensions between the two Koreas, which remain technically at war. North Korea has increasingly hostile rhetoric towards the South in recent years, even designating it a hostile state. Last year, Pyongyang destroyed sections of inter-Korean roads and rail lines, prompting South Korean military warnings. A 2018 military accord aimed at preventing accidental clashes was also scrapped by North Korea in 2023, with South Korea following suit.

Despite the heightened tensions, there are some indications that North Korea might be easing restrictions on foreign tourism. Koryo Tours, a Beijing-based travel agency, reported that tours to North Korea have officially resumed, with some staff allowed into the Rason area. This could mark a tentative reopening after a more than five-year closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the demolition of the family reunion facility casts a significant shadow over any potential for improved relations.
