Thu Feb 13 10:10:08 UTC 2025: ## Prison Art Exhibit Opens in Chennai, Showcasing Inmates’ Talents

**Chennai, February 13, 2025** – A unique art exhibition showcasing the creative talents of inmates at Puzhal Central Prison has opened at the Madras Literary Society (MLS) in Chennai. The “Art in Prison” project, a collaboration between Project 39A, National Law University Delhi, and the Sumansa Foundation, features pottery, sketches, murals, and cyanotypes created by approximately 60 inmates.

The exhibit, part of the ongoing Chennai Photo Biennale, aims to demonstrate the power of art as a tool for self-expression and rehabilitation. Carnatic musician T.M. Krishna, head of the Sumansa Foundation, emphasized the project’s goal of making art accessible to everyone. He highlighted the transformative impact of the project, noting that the inmates repeatedly requested extended practice time.

Project coordinator Rahimunisa Begam described the formation of unexpected friendships among the inmates as a key positive outcome. The theatre exercises, in particular, encouraged vulnerability and emotional expression, even prompting tears, a significant step given societal norms.

The exhibition, which runs until March 16th at the MLS, has already garnered significant public interest, prompting curiosity about prison life and the creative process within its walls. Visitors can view the artwork daily from 10 am to 5 pm, with free entry.
