Thu Feb 13 12:02:29 UTC 2025: **Jamia Millia Islamia Students Detained After Protest, University Suspends Student Leader**
**New Delhi, February 13, 2025** – Fourteen students from Jamia Millia Islamia University were detained by police early this morning following a protest over disciplinary action taken against them. The arrests, made at approximately 6:00 AM, came at the request of university administration. The students, reportedly members of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), had been protesting against show-cause notices issued last year related to previous demonstrations.
The protest escalated on Monday, with students allegedly shutting down the university canteen, occupying space outside it, and causing damage to university property, including the Central Canteen and the office of a security advisor. Sakhi, the president of the SFI JMI, has been suspended by the university in response to these actions.
Police confirmed the detentions, citing a request from university authorities to maintain law and order. A significant police presence, including riot control vehicles and Rapid Action Force personnel, remains deployed around the campus. The university’s disciplinary committee is scheduled to meet on February 25th to review the involvement of two PhD students in the “Jamia Resistance Day” event held on December 15th, 2024 – an annual commemoration of the 2019 protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The investigation into the students’ actions is ongoing.
