**Bengaluru, India (February 12, 2025)** – Doctors at Sakra World Hospital in Bengaluru successfully removed a large brain tumor from a 34-year-old Ghanaian patient without resorting to a blood transfusion, respecting the patient’s religious beliefs as a Jehovah’s Witness.
The patient, identified only as Adan, suffered from left-sided weakness, worsening headaches, and ultimately a seizure due to a 10×9 cm meningioma – a tumor growing from the membranes surrounding the brain. The surgery, a craniotomy, was led by Dr. Arjun Srivatsa and his team.
Meningiomas are not cancerous but can press on brain tissue, causing significant neurological problems. While many grow slowly, Adan’s large tumor required immediate removal. The surgery presented a challenge due to Adan’s religious refusal of blood transfusions, as meningiomas are highly vascular and prone to bleeding. Despite significant blood loss during the procedure, the surgical team successfully removed the entire tumor without the need for a transfusion.
Eight months post-surgery, Adan is recovering well with no neurological deficits. Dr. Srivatsa emphasized the importance of timely diagnosis and intervention, particularly when dealing with patients with religious restrictions on medical treatment. The successful surgery highlights the expertise and sensitivity of the medical team in addressing both the medical complexity and the patient’s religious beliefs.
