Mon Feb 10 11:40:26 UTC 2025: ## Sri Lanka to Implement Power Cuts After Plant Failure
**Colombo, Sri Lanka –** Sri Lanka will implement 90-minute power cuts on Monday and Tuesday, February 10th and 11th, due to a breakdown at the Norochcholai coal power plant, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) announced. The 900-megawatt plant’s failure has created a significant power shortage.
The CEB stated that the rationing will occur in two slots between 3 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. across different areas. This decision follows a major island-wide power outage on Sunday, lasting nearly six hours, attributed to a monkey contacting a grid station in a Colombo suburb.
This marks the first power rationing in Sri Lanka since August 2022, when the country faced a severe economic crisis, resulting in widespread fuel and power shortages. The crisis, exacerbated by forex shortages, led to 12-hour power cuts and extensive queues for essential goods. Protests during this period ultimately forced the resignation of then-President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. India’s $4 billion credit line assisted in Sri Lanka’s subsequent recovery efforts.
