Tue Feb 11 17:45:06 UTC 2025: ## Air Force Chief Expresses Concerns Over HAL’s Tejas Delivery Delays

**Bengaluru, February 12, 2025** – The Indian Air Force (IAF) chief, Air Chief Marshal A. P. Singh, expressed serious concerns on Tuesday regarding the delayed delivery of Light Combat Aircraft (LCA)-Mk1A by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). In strong remarks made at the Aero India show and later shared on social media, the Air Chief stated he lacked confidence in HAL’s ability to meet deadlines, calling the situation “very wrong.”

ACM Singh revealed that despite assurances of 11 Tejas Mk1A aircraft being ready by February, none were delivered. He further criticized the aircraft currently being presented as Mk1A versions, stating that they lacked the necessary weapons and capabilities to meet the designation’s standards.

While acknowledging the challenges, HAL Chairman and Managing Director D. K. Sunil countered that delays were not due to a lack of effort, emphasizing that supply chain issues, specifically with General Electric (GE) engine deliveries, had been resolved. He confirmed that three Tejas Mk1A were already flying, with 11 more expected by year’s end, allowing deliveries to the IAF to commence. Mr. Sunil further projected the completion of the existing order of 87 LCA-Mk1A within three and a half years and an additional order of 97 jets by FY31-32, aiming for a production rate of 24 jets annually. He also anticipated concluding deals for 97 more LCA-Mk1A and 156 Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) Prachand within the next six months, totaling ₹1.3 lakh crore.

Despite HAL’s assurances, ACM Singh stressed the need for drastic changes within HAL to improve efficiency and coordination. He emphasized his desire to be proven wrong but highlighted the perceived lack of overall mission focus. The Air Chief also commented on media coverage of his remarks, noting that his intention was to highlight critical issues, not to cast blame.

IAF officials previously stated that the force aims to have 32-33 fighter squadrons by 2030 and 35-36 by 2040. The current delays in LCA-Mk1A deliveries could impact these plans.
