Tue Feb 11 19:23:12 UTC 2025: ## Chennai Gets First Disability-Accessible Beach Pathway

**Chennai, February 12, 2025** – Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin inaugurated a new accessible pathway at Besant Nagar beach today, marking the city’s first such facility. The 190-meter-long, 2.8-meter-wide pathway, built at a cost of Rs. 1.61 crore under the Singara Chennai 2.0 scheme, includes a dedicated sea deck and parking for people with disabilities. The project, initiated by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin last August, was completed in response to demands from the Disability Rights Alliance (DRA).

The pathway, constructed using durable wood, also features signage and storage for wheelchairs and stretchers. Similar pathways are planned for Thiruvanmiyur beach (expected completion within six months) and additional safety measures are being considered. Concerns about the safety of beach wheelchairs have prompted the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to explore additional safety measures. The project received CRZ clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in March 2024.

In a separate event, Mr. Stalin also renamed Kamdar Nagar First Main Road in Nungambakkam after renowned singer S.P. Balasubrahmanyam.
