**NEW DELHI, February 12, 2025** – The Delhi Traffic Police issued a record-high number of challans (traffic tickets) in 2024, exceeding the previous five years, Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai revealed in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. Over 23.09 lakh challans were issued, representing a 33.74% increase compared to 2023.
The surge in challans is attributed to increased vehicular density, insufficient public awareness regarding traffic rules, and stricter enforcement by the police. Despite the rise in on-the-spot challans, the overall number of notices issued decreased. Over 51.41 lakh notices were issued in 2024, down from 56.53 lakh in 2023. Notices are generated electronically through automated violation detection cameras, unlike on-the-spot challans.
These traffic violations resulted in a total fine collection of over ₹46.29 crore for the Delhi Traffic Police in 2024.
