**ERODE, February 10, 2025** – Tension gripped Chithode in Erode district last night after residents intercepted a vehicle allegedly dumping textile effluents into a PWD-maintained canal. The incident, which occurred near Gangapuram – an area with numerous textile processing units – sparked protests.
Residents, who had previously voiced concerns about illegal effluent discharge, observed a group emptying four barrels of waste into the canal early Sunday morning. They seized the vehicle and staged a demonstration until police arrived and launched an investigation.
The timing of the alleged pollution, just before the commencement of the second irrigation cycle, has heightened anxieties among farmers and locals who fear the impact on agricultural lands and water resources. The investigation is ongoing.
