Sun Feb 09 22:44:30 UTC 2025: **Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh Resigns Amidst Ongoing Violence**
Imphal, Manipur – Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned from his post today, following a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah earlier in the day. The resignation, accepted by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, comes amidst nearly two years of intense violence and unrest in the state.
Singh’s resignation is attributed to both the ongoing conflict and growing dissatisfaction within the BJP leadership regarding his handling of the situation. Numerous BJP MLAs had previously called for his removal, citing his perceived failure to control the violence.
The resignation prompted immediate reaction from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who criticized both Singh and the BJP for their handling of the crisis, questioning the delay in Singh’s departure. Gandhi highlighted the prolonged violence and loss of life in Manipur under Singh’s leadership. He further urged Prime Minister Modi to visit Manipur immediately, address the people’s concerns, and outline a plan to restore normalcy.
Reports suggest that around 12 BJP MLAs were continuously pressing the party’s high command for a change in leadership, expressing their discontent with Singh’s performance. The situation was further complicated by the withdrawal of support from the National Peoples Party (NPP) and the threat of a no-confidence motion from the Congress. This, coupled with the possibility of BJP MLAs defying the party whip during a no-confidence vote, is believed to have hastened Singh’s resignation.
While the BJP maintains a majority in the assembly, the party is expected to announce Singh’s successor within the next day or two. The state remains tense, and the focus now shifts to the appointment of a new Chief Minister and the urgent need to address the ongoing violence and restore peace in Manipur.
