Sun Feb 09 18:01:58 UTC 2025: ## Experts Highlight Importance of Menstrual Health in The Hindu Webinar

**Chennai, February 9, 2025** – A webinar on the management of heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB), held as part of The Hindu’s “Healthy India, Happy India” initiative in collaboration with Naruvi Hospitals, Vellore, emphasized the crucial role of menstrual health awareness and timely medical intervention.

Leading gynecologists highlighted key indicators of abnormal menstrual bleeding, including cycles lasting over seven days, heavy clotting, frequent periods, prolonged delays, and post-coital bleeding. They stressed the importance of maintaining a menstrual diary to track irregularities and urged women to consult doctors if experiencing excessively heavy or delayed periods.

Dr. Abraham Peedicayil, senior consultant in Gynae-Oncology at Naruvi Hospitals, detailed the phases of the menstrual cycle and the significance of maintaining haemoglobin levels. He also addressed perimenopausal bleeding and postmenopausal bleeding, emphasizing the need for immediate investigation of any postmenopausal bleeding to rule out cancer. He recommended regular checkups, including cervical smear tests and ultrasound scans.

Dr. P.B. Akilasree, senior consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, focused on HMB in adolescents, explaining that blood loss exceeding 80ml per cycle is considered excessive. She highlighted causes such as anovulation and hormonal imbalances, and advised non-hormonal medication, iron supplements, and in some cases, surgical intervention.

Dr. Jeyasheela Kamaraj, consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, addressed HMB in women aged 19-45, noting that one in four women experience this condition. She stressed the importance of identifying the underlying cause, whether infectious or structural, and outlined treatment options ranging from iron supplements and oral contraceptives to surgical procedures like hysterectomy.

The webinar aimed to raise awareness about HMB, its causes, diagnosis, and available treatment options, ultimately promoting better menstrual health among women of all ages.
