Sun Feb 09 19:05:14 UTC 2025: ## AAP Chief Minister Resigns After Crushing Delhi Election Defeat; BJP Poised to Form Government

**New Delhi –** Delhi Chief Minister Atishi tendered her resignation to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on Sunday, following the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) resounding defeat in the Delhi Assembly elections. The BJP secured a commanding 48 seats in the 70-member assembly, wresting power from the AAP after a decade of rule.

While AAP suffered a significant loss, securing only 22 seats compared to their previous 62, Atishi retained her Kalkaji constituency. Despite her personal victory, she cited the need to fight against what she termed the BJP’s “authoritarianism” as the reason for her resignation, stating that this was not a time for celebration. Her continued presence in the party, however, seems assured.

Prominent AAP leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and Saurabh Bharadwaj, all lost their respective seats.

The BJP is currently deliberating on its next Chief Minister. Parvesh Verma, who defeated Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency, is a leading contender, along with other prominent figures like Vijender Gupta, Satish Upadhyay, Ashish Sood, and Jitendra Mahajan. However, the party also hinted that the national leadership might nominate a surprise candidate.

A BJP delegation met with the Lieutenant Governor to begin the process of forming a new government, expected to be finalized after Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns from his overseas trip.
