**Guatemala City, Guatemala** – At least 30 people are dead and many more injured following a horrific bus accident outside Guatemala City. A bus carrying passengers plunged from the Puente Belice highway bridge into a ravine on Monday.
Emergency responders are currently working to rescue individuals still trapped within the wreckage of the overturned bus. Mynor Ruano, a spokesperson for the city’s fire service, confirmed ongoing rescue efforts. Social media footage released by the fire department shows rescue workers extracting victims from the ravine.
The accident occurred on a busy route in and out of the capital. President Bernardo Arevalo declared three days of national mourning and deployed the army and national disaster agency to aid in rescue and recovery operations. He expressed his solidarity with the victims’ families.
Guatemala City Mayor Ricardo Quinonez reported that emergency services were immediately deployed and traffic police are working to reroute traffic around the affected area. The investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
