**TIRUPATTUR, Tamil Nadu – February 9, 2025** – Two separate fires at poultry farms in Tamil Nadu’s Tirupattur and Vellore districts resulted in the death of over 8,000 chickens on Sunday. The incidents caused an estimated ₹40 lakh (approximately $480,000 USD) in damages.
The first fire occurred around 10 a.m. at a farm owned by K. Dharanirajan near Ambur in Tirupattur district. A fire, apparently originating from an electrical short circuit in one of the sheds, quickly spread, consuming approximately 3,000 birds. Dharanirajan escaped unharmed and alerted authorities. Firefighters extinguished the blaze after an hour, containing the damage to a single shed.
A second fire broke out around 4 a.m. at a farm near Gudiyatham in Vellore district, owned by V. Ramesh. This fire, also suspected to be caused by an electrical short circuit, destroyed all six sheds on the property, killing approximately 5,000 chickens. The fire spread rapidly before firefighters arrived.
Both incidents are under investigation by local police. The total loss, including the value of the chickens, feed, and equipment, is estimated at ₹40 lakh. Initial investigations point to electrical short circuits as the likely cause of both fires.
