**Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh** – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a resounding victory in the Milkipur Assembly by-election, defeating the Samajwadi Party (SP) by a significant margin. BJP candidate Chandrabhanu Paswan garnered over 87,000 votes, exceeding his opponent Ajit Prasad by more than 60,000 votes.
The win marks a significant reversal for the BJP, which lost the Faizabad Lok Sabha seat (which includes Milkipur) to the SP last year. BJP leaders hailed the victory as a strong endorsement of the party’s developmental agenda and a rejection of the SP’s policies.
BJP MP Ravi Kishan attributed the success to the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, while Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya framed the result as a repudiation of the SP’s alleged appeasement of “goons” and Akhilesh Yadav’s criticism of the Election Commission. Maurya declared the by-election result as merely a “trailer” for the 2027 state assembly elections, predicting a sweeping BJP victory then.
Throughout the counting process, Paswan maintained a comfortable lead, exceeding 10,000 votes after just three rounds and crossing the 100,000 vote mark with several rounds still to be counted. Paswan visited a temple in Ayodhya to celebrate the win, thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for their support.
Union Minister OP Rajbhar echoed the sentiment, stating the victory reflects the public’s preference for development under Yogi Adityanath’s leadership. In contrast, Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad accused the BJP of dishonesty, a claim swiftly dismissed by the victorious party. The BJP’s substantial win in Milkipur signals a crucial shift in the political landscape of Uttar Pradesh, setting the stage for future electoral contests.
