NEW DELHI — The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieved a landslide victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, winning 48 out of 70 seats and ousting the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) after a more than two-decade absence from power. The AAP, which previously held 62 seats, saw its tally plummet to 22. The Congress party failed to win any seats.
The BJP’s victory marks a significant shift in Delhi’s political landscape. Their vote share increased from 40% in 2020 to 45% in this election, while the AAP’s share dropped from over 50% to 43%.
Several names are circulating as potential candidates for the new Chief Minister. Prominent contenders include Parvesh Verma, who defeated AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, and Ramesh Bidhuri. Other names in the running are BJP MP Manoj Tiwari, Kapil Mishra, Ashish Sood, Rekha Gupta, and Vijender Gupta.
Outgoing Chief Minister Atishi, of the AAP, resigned on Sunday following the election results. She attributed the loss, in part, to what she described as widespread irregularities during the election process. BJP leaders, however, attributed the victory to the public’s confidence in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s policies and development agenda.
BJP President JP Nadda met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the selection process for the new Chief Minister. The party is expected to announce its decision soon. Parvesh Verma has already indicated that revamping the Yamuna riverfront will be a key priority for the new BJP government.
