**CHENNAI, February 8, 2025** – Two hyperlocal community groups in Chennai are thriving, proving that the pandemic-fueled minimalist movement can foster both environmental sustainability and neighborly connection. Declutter Elcot Avenue in Sholinganallur and Marketplace @ Valmiki Nagar have transformed the way residents handle unwanted items, creating thriving online marketplaces for used goods and fostering a strong sense of community.
Declutter Elcot Avenue, founded in early 2020, boasts over 1400 members across two WhatsApp groups (the first reaching its member limit). Initiated by Benazir Tehrani, who was inspired by similar initiatives in Mumbai, the group aims to prevent usable items from ending up in landfills. Strict guidelines maintain order, prohibiting business promotions and requiring detailed item descriptions. Tehrani hopes to see a dedicated app developed to streamline similar community decluttering efforts.
Marketplace @ Valmiki Nagar, launched in November 2020 by the Valmiki Nagar Residents Welfare Association, has approximately 700 members. Initially focused on reuse and recycling, it has evolved to include a “yellow pages” function, connecting residents with needed services and local businesses. With a strong emphasis on community building and regulation to prevent disorder, the group showcases how decluttering can strengthen social bonds. For instance, one member purchased affordable toys for her maid’s daughter through the group, illustrating the initiative’s positive social impact. The group’s success highlights the importance of clear purpose and strong administrative oversight in such endeavors.
Both initiatives showcase a successful model for sustainable waste management and community building, demonstrating the power of hyperlocal solutions to tackle environmental challenges and foster stronger neighborhood relationships.
