Sat Feb 08 00:54:02 UTC 2025: ## Meta to Lay Off Thousands Next Week, While Simultaneously Hiring in Key Areas

**MENLO PARK, CA –** Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, will begin a round of layoffs affecting approximately 5% of its workforce starting next Monday, February 6th, according to internal memos obtained by Reuters. The cuts, described as “performance terminations,” will impact employees globally, with the exception of those in Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands due to local labor regulations. Employees in other European, Asian, and African countries will receive notifications between February 11th and 18th.

Despite the layoffs, Meta will simultaneously expedite the hiring process for machine learning engineers and other critical engineering roles between February 11th and March 13th. This dual approach suggests a strategic shift within the company, focusing resources on specific growth areas while streamlining less productive departments.

Meta’s Head of People, Janelle Gale, stated in an internal memo that offices will remain open on Monday, and no further updates regarding the layoffs will be provided. A Meta spokesperson declined to comment on the memos. The company previously confirmed plans to reduce its workforce, focusing on lower-performing employees.
