**Mumbai, India** – The much-anticipated Bollywood debut of Khushi Kapoor and Junaid Khan in “Loveyapa” has fallen flat at the box office. The romantic-comedy, which opened in theaters on Friday, raked in a disappointing ₹1.25 crore (approximately $150,000 USD) in its India net opening, according to early estimates from Sacnilk.
This underwhelming performance is surprising considering the film’s high-profile marketing campaign, which included a star-studded premiere featuring Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, and Shah Rukh Khan. The debut of Kapoor (daughter of late Sridevi) and Khan (son of Aamir Khan) also generated significant pre-release buzz. Despite this, the film saw only a 9.56 percent occupancy rate across approximately 2300 screens nationwide.
“Loveyapa,” a remake of the successful Tamil film “Love Today,” faced stiff competition from Himesh Reshammiya’s “Badass Ravikumar,” which opened with a considerably higher ₹2.75 crore. The film also received mixed reviews upon its release on February 7th. The poor performance continues a recent trend of underperforming Bollywood remakes.
The film, directed by Advait Chandan and boasting a large ensemble cast, reportedly had a budget of ₹60 crore – a stark contrast to the original Tamil film’s ₹6 crore budget. The original “Love Today” was a critical and commercial success, grossing ₹83.55 crore worldwide.
While “Loveyapa” opted for a theatrical release, another Hindi remake, “Mrs.” (based on “The Great Indian Kitchen”), premiered on the streaming platform ZEE5 on the same day. The significant disparity in the box office performance between “Loveyapa” and its competitor, along with the film’s mixed reception, suggests the remake struggled to connect with audiences.
