NEW DELHI — The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a resounding victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, ending the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) seven-year rule. Election Commission trends show the BJP well above the halfway mark, leading in 45 out of 70 assembly seats. The AAP is currently leading in 25 seats.
Celebrations erupted at BJP headquarters as results came in, while a somber mood settled over the AAP office. Exit polls had already predicted a BJP win, defying AAP’s hopes for a third consecutive term.
The election results have sparked a social media frenzy, with an old video of AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal resurfacing. In the video from 2023, Kejriwal confidently asserted that the BJP would never defeat AAP in his lifetime. This statement is now being widely circulated, juxtaposed with the BJP’s decisive win.
According to the Election Commission, the BJP currently holds a 47.01% vote share, compared to AAP’s 43.16%. Key AAP figures, including Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, are trailing in their respective constituencies. Kejriwal is currently behind BJP’s Parvesh Verma in New Delhi, while Atishi is trailing in Kalkaji. However, Manish Sisodia maintains a lead in Jangpura.
The BJP’s victory marks a significant political shift in Delhi, ending over two decades of non-BJP governance in the national capital.
