Fri Feb 07 14:54:13 UTC 2025: ## Madurai Residents Manually Remove Sewage Due to Lack of Drainage System

**Madurai, February 7, 2025** – Over 300 residents of Kalliyamman Kovil Street in Madurai district are forced to manually remove sewage from collection points outside their homes due to the absence of a proper drainage system. For over a decade, the residents have lacked adequate sewage disposal, leading to stagnant wastewater from bathrooms and kitchens accumulating in pits. This situation, according to residents like Karuppayi and Gnanasekaran, causes foul odors and poses a significant health risk.

Residents report repeatedly bringing this issue to the attention of local authorities through protests and gram sabha resolutions. While officials have promised action, no substantial progress has been made. The lack of a functioning drainage system is compounded by non-functional drinking water connections provided under the Jal Jeevan Mission, further exacerbating the residents’ plight.

A district administration official in Vadipatti block acknowledged the complaints and stated that the sewage issue will be addressed soon. They also promised to re-investigate the faulty drinking water connections, despite claiming the problem has already been resolved. The residents, however, remain skeptical given the prolonged inaction.
