**New Delhi, February 7, 2025** – Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) held its 8th convocation ceremony on Thursday, marking a significant milestone after a 46-year gap. JNU Vice-Chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit highlighted a notable increase in women’s representation in leadership roles, noting a rise to 27% since she assumed office in 2022. A total of 2,721 students received degrees, including 798 PhDs – with 408 awarded to female scholars.
Pandit emphasized JNU’s commitment to both nationalism and diversity, celebrating dissent, democracy, and development. The ceremony also showcased the university’s expanding partnerships, with new centers established thanks to funding from state governments, including a Centre of Excellence for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj (funded by Maharashtra) and a Centre for Tamil Studies (funded by Tamil Nadu with ₹10 crore).
Former ISRO Chairman S.P. Somanath and former Foreign Secretary Kanwal Sibal were among the dignitaries present at the event held at the Prajnan Bhavan, All India Council for Technical Education.
