Thu Feb 06 04:50:40 UTC 2025: ## Protesters Burn Down Bangladesh Founder’s Home During Ousted PM’s Address

**DHAKA, BANGLADESH –** A mob of thousands attacked and set fire to the Dhaka residence of Bangladesh’s founding father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, on Wednesday, February 6, 2025. The attack occurred during a live online address by his daughter, ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The incident, witnessed by numerous individuals, unfolded as protestors gathered in front of the Dhanmondi-32 residence, which serves as a memorial museum. The demonstration followed a social media call for a “Bulldozer Procession,” coinciding with Hasina’s scheduled address.

In her speech, organized by the now-disbanded Chhatra League, Hasina urged resistance against the current government led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus, which came to power after a student-led movement. She condemned the destruction of the residence, stating that the current regime could destroy buildings, but not history itself.

The attack follows previous incidents, including a fire at the residence in August 2024, after Hasina fled to India following the fall of her government. Hasina, who had donated the property to become a museum, described the attack as an act of cowardice.

Authorities deployed troops to the scene, but were met with hostility from the protestors, who had already vandalized a mural of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and defaced the building with graffiti. A key organizer of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement has since called for the demolition of all residences belonging to former Awami League officials.

Meanwhile, the interim government stated it is working to extradite Hasina from India, where she has been living since August 2024. The Bangladesh International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has issued arrest warrants for Hasina and several associates on charges of crimes against humanity and genocide. The 77-year-old former Prime Minister maintains her innocence.
