**Lisbon, Portugal –** Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan V has been named the 50th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslim community, following the death of his father, Prince Karim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan IV, at age 88 in Lisbon yesterday. The announcement was made today after the unsealing of the late Imam’s will.
Prince Rahim, a direct descendant of Prophet Muhammad through his daughter Fatima and son-in-law Ali, will now lead the estimated 12 to 15 million Ismailis residing in over 35 countries worldwide. The Ismailis have a continuous tradition of hereditary Imamat, with a living leader guiding the community for over 1400 years. The new Imam’s ascension marks a significant moment for the global Ismaili community.
