**Madrid, Spain** – Real Madrid and Brazilian football legend Marcelo has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 36. The highly decorated left-back, who spent 15 seasons at Real Madrid, revealed his decision via social media on Thursday.

Marcelo’s illustrious career boasts an impressive trophy cabinet, including five UEFA Champions League titles – a feat that cemented his status as one of the game’s greats. His contributions to Real Madrid’s unprecedented success over the past decade are undeniable, with a pivotal goal in the 2014 Champions League final securing “La Décima,” their 10th European Cup. He also played a key role in the club’s three consecutive Champions League victories between 2015 and 2018.

In total, Marcelo amassed 25 trophies during his 546 appearances for Real Madrid, adding six LaLiga titles, two Copa del Rey trophies, and several other major honors to his impressive record. He also captained the club during his later years.

Real Madrid President Florentino Pérez lauded Marcelo as “one of the greatest left backs in Real Madrid and world football history,” describing him as “one of our greatest legends.”

After leaving Real Madrid in 2022, Marcelo returned to his first club, Fluminense, winning the Copa Libertadores in 2023 before departing in November. His international career with Brazil also saw significant success, including a Confederations Cup win and Olympic medals.

While ending his playing career, Marcelo hinted at continued involvement in football, stating, “My journey as a player ends here, but I still have so much to give football.”
