Thu Feb 06 08:54:01 UTC 2025: ## Indian MP Condemns “Insulting” Deportation of Indians from US

**New Delhi, India** – Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has strongly condemned the manner in which 104 Indian immigrants were deported from the United States, calling the method an “insult to India and the dignity of Indians.” The deportees, flown back to Amritsar on a US military aircraft Wednesday, reported being handcuffed throughout the flight.

Tharoor asserted that while India has an obligation to accept its citizens deported from the US, the method of deportation – using a military plane and handcuffs – was unacceptable. He drew a parallel to Colombia’s rejection of a similar deportation, highlighting the need for a diplomatic response.

“They have every legal right to deport people who are illegally in their country,” Tharoor stated, “But to send them like this abruptly in a military aircraft and in handcuffs is an insult…The Modi government needs to issue a message, making it very clear that we accept the right of Americans to send illegal people away but they have no right to do it in such an insulting manner.”

Tharoor urged the Indian government to demand an explanation from the US and take action to prevent similar incidents in the future. He described the treatment of the deportees as “atrocious behaviour” and a humiliation for India. This incident, he added, is not the first instance of such treatment of Indian nationals deported from the United States.
