**Nagpur, India –** Joe Root’s highly anticipated return to One Day International (ODI) cricket for England ended in disappointment on Thursday. The star batsman was dismissed for 19 runs off 31 balls by Ravindra Jadeja in the first ODI against India in Nagpur.
Jadeja trapped Root lbw with a quick delivery that beat the batsman’s defense. Although Root reviewed the umpire’s decision, the technology confirmed the ball was clipping the top of middle stump, upholding the on-field call.
Root’s comeback followed a successful stint in the SA20 and a long break from ODI cricket, his last appearance coming during the 2023 World Cup. He came to the crease after a promising start by England’s openers, Phil Salt and Ben Duckett, but a run-out and a double wicket maiden by Harshit Rana shifted the momentum in India’s favour.
Despite a boundary off Kuldeep Yadav, Root adopted a cautious approach, only to fall victim to Jadeja’s attacking bowling strategy. The left-arm spinner consistently increased the pace of his deliveries, forcing Root onto the back foot and ultimately securing the crucial lbw dismissal.
This was Jadeja’s fourth dismissal of Root in ODIs and his 12th dismissal across all formats. Despite a relatively good overall record against Jadeja, with 115 runs in 10 ODI encounters, Root’s return match ended prematurely, leaving England at 111 for 4 in the 19th over.
