**Lisbon, Portugal –** His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, the 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, passed away peacefully in Lisbon on February 4, 2025, at the age of 88. His 67-year reign as Imam, beginning in 1957 at the age of 20, saw him guide a community of over 15 million Ismailis across more than 25 countries.
A direct descendant of Prophet Muhammad, Aga Khan IV dedicated his life to the spiritual and material well-being of his followers. Globally recognized as a statesman and humanitarian, he spearheaded the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), a vast network improving the lives of vulnerable populations through initiatives in healthcare, education, economic development, and cultural preservation. The AKDN’s impact is substantial, annually providing electricity to 10 million, healthcare to 5 million, and education to 2 million, among other achievements.
Beyond his religious leadership, Aga Khan IV was a prominent figure on the world stage. He was instrumental in fostering peace and dialogue, notably facilitating talks between Presidents Reagan and Gorbachev in 1985. A champion of pluralism and interfaith understanding, he founded the Global Centre for Pluralism in partnership with the Canadian government.
His commitment to education led to the establishment of the Aga Khan University and the University of Central Asia, while his passion for the arts resulted in the creation of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture and the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto. A successful racehorse owner and breeder, he also represented Iran in the 1964 Winter Olympics.
Aga Khan IV received numerous international awards and honorary degrees in recognition of his humanitarian work and contributions to global society. He is survived by his children, Princess Zahra, Prince Rahim, Prince Hussain, and Prince Aly Muhammad, as well as his brother, sister, and four grandchildren. His legacy as a spiritual leader, humanitarian, and global statesman will undoubtedly endure for generations to come.
