**New Delhi, Feb 6, 2025** – Exit polls for the Delhi Assembly elections are projecting a significant victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with Axis My India predicting a 48% vote share and a potential 40+ seat majority. However, the accuracy of these polls is being questioned, given their past performance.
Axis My India’s projections show the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) securing 42% of the vote, and the Congress trailing significantly at 7%. Interestingly, the data suggests younger voters (18-25) favor the BJP, while a substantial 47% of 26-35 year-olds back AAP. Other exit polls, however, presented a more mixed picture, with some predicting a closer race or even a narrow AAP win.
The accuracy of Delhi exit polls has been inconsistent since AAP’s emergence in 2013. While they correctly predicted a hung assembly in 2013, they consistently underestimated AAP’s strength in subsequent elections. In 2015 and 2020, they predicted AAP victories but failed to accurately reflect the scale of their wins. By 2020, accuracy improved, but questions remain about their reliability in 2025.
Reactions to the exit polls have been sharply divided. BJP leaders expressed confidence, citing the polls as evidence of a coming victory and accusing AAP of mismanagement. AAP leaders, meanwhile, dismissed the polls as inaccurate, pointing to their past underestimation of AAP’s performance, and accused the BJP of using tactics like “Operation Lotus” to influence the election. Congress expressed skepticism towards all polls, predicting a better-than-expected performance for their party.
A post-election scuffle between AAP and BJP workers in Sangam Vihar further highlighted the tensions surrounding the election. While both parties accused each other of violence, Delhi Police reported receiving no formal complaints.
The high-stakes election also saw a record number of Model Code of Conduct violations (over 1090 cases) reported by Delhi Police, along with numerous arrests for various offences.
The final results will be announced on February 8th, leaving voters and political analysts alike in suspense. The outcome hinges on factors such as middle-class support, the impact of Congress on the Muslim vote, and the effectiveness of the BJP’s “double-engine” government narrative. The Muslim vote is particularly significant, with an increased number of candidates from various parties vying for that demographic’s support.
