Thu Feb 06 15:54:02 UTC 2025: ## Thoothukudi Farmers Await Crop Insurance Payments

**THOOTHUKUDI, February 6, 2025** – Over 5,000 farmers in Thoothukudi are demanding the immediate release of crop insurance payments for cotton and shallots following devastating losses during the 2023-24 northeast monsoon season. According to A. Varadharajan, president of the Karisal Bhoomi Farmers’ Association, the delay is causing significant hardship.

While farmers who insured their crops before November 30, 2023 received prompt compensation, those who insured later faced delays, necessitating protests to secure payments for coriander and chilli. These payments were finally released in December 2024. However, insurance for cotton and shallots remains outstanding despite repeated appeals to authorities.

Varadharajan highlighted the double blow suffered by farmers, with the 2022 monsoon also severely impacting their harvests just before the 2023-24 season. He urged immediate intervention to release the pending funds and alleviate the financial burden on affected farmers.
