Thu Feb 06 11:35:08 UTC 2025: ## Climate Change Demands ‘Climate Doctors,’ Expert Warns in Chennai

**Chennai, February 6, 2025** – With climate change increasingly impacting global health, the urgent need for specialized training in climate-related health risks has been highlighted by Dr. Jay Lemery, Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Speaking at a discussion organized by the U.S. Consulate General, Chennai, in partnership with the Press Institute of India, Dr. Lemery emphasized the need for healthcare professionals across all specializations to understand and address the health consequences of rising temperatures, extreme weather, and shifting disease patterns.

Dr. Lemery likened the planet’s volatile weather system to a child given excessive sugar, illustrating the chaotic and unpredictable nature of climate change. He stressed that the effects are far-reaching, causing not only physical health problems such as respiratory illnesses and heatstroke, but also exacerbating mental health issues, food insecurity, and displacement due to natural disasters. He highlighted the disproportionate impact on low-income communities and regions lacking sufficient infrastructure, particularly during extreme heat events.

To mitigate these risks, Dr. Lemery advocated for proactive measures including localized heat warnings, cancellation of outdoor events during extreme heat, and the establishment of cooling centers for vulnerable populations. He stressed the importance of public health initiatives to inform and protect communities from the escalating health threats posed by climate change.
