Thu Feb 06 13:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Tiny Chance of Asteroid Strike in 2032, Experts Say: No Need to Panic
**New York, NY** – A newly discovered asteroid, designated 2024 YR4, has a 1.3 percent chance of impacting Earth on December 22, 2032, according to astronomers. While the size of the space rock – estimated to be between 130 and 330 feet long – could cause significant localized damage if it were to hit a populated area, experts emphasize that the probability of a collision remains low.
Discovered just after Christmas, 2024 YR4’s trajectory has been modeled by researchers. While a 1.3 percent chance of impact might sound alarming, David Rankin, a comet and asteroid spotter at the University of Arizona, assures the public there is no cause for alarm. “It’s not a number you want to ignore, but it’s not a number you need to lose sleep over,” he stated.
The relatively high probability, compared to many other asteroid tracking scenarios, is due to the current level of data on 2024 YR4. As more observations are made, the accuracy of predictions will increase, and the probability of an impact is likely to either be refined downwards, or completely ruled out.
Andy Rivkin, an astronomer and planetary defense researcher at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, highlighted the success of international efforts in asteroid detection and tracking. “The international systems we’re putting in place…are working as intended,” he said, emphasizing the early discovery of 2024 YR4 as a positive sign. While an impact of this size would be catastrophic for a local area, it would not pose an existential threat to humanity.
For now, experts advise calm. The low probability of impact, coupled with the years of lead time before the potential event, allows for continued monitoring and refinement of the asteroid’s trajectory.
