**Beijing, February 4, 2025** – China announced retaliatory tariffs on a range of US goods, including coal, liquefied natural gas, crude oil, agricultural machinery, and large-displacement cars, in response to what it called “unilateral tariff hikes” imposed by the United States over the weekend. The new Chinese tariffs, ranging from 10% to 15%, will take effect next Monday.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce stated that the US tariffs violate World Trade Organization rules and disrupt trade cooperation between the two nations. The US action, announced on Saturday, imposed a 10% tariff increase on goods from several countries, including China, ostensibly to combat illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
Adding to the escalating trade tensions, China’s State Administration for Market Regulation also launched an antitrust investigation into Google. The investigation’s specifics remain unclear, but it further intensifies the economic friction between the two global powers.
