Wed Feb 05 09:20:40 UTC 2025: ## $40,000 Egg Heist Amidst Nationwide Shortage
**Greencastle, PA** – In a brazen act amidst a nationwide egg shortage and soaring prices, approximately 100,000 eggs valued at $40,000 were stolen from Pete & Gerry’s Organics in Greencastle, Pennsylvania, on Saturday evening. The theft, which occurred at 8:40 pm, has left authorities investigating the large-scale egg heist.
The incident comes as the US grapples with a significant egg supply shortage, largely attributed to a widespread avian flu outbreak that has killed nearly 136 million birds since 2022. This has driven egg prices up by 36.8 percent in the past year, with a dozen eggs now costing upwards of $4.69 in central Pennsylvania. The USDA predicts a further 20 percent increase in egg prices this year, potentially doubling the price from August 2023 to the end of 2024.
The increased demand, fueled by both price anticipation and concerns about future availability, has exacerbated the situation, according to Emory University marketing professor Saloni Vastan.
Pennsylvania State Police are appealing to the public for information regarding the theft and urge anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact the Chambersburg division at 717-264-5161. The investigation is ongoing.
