Tue Feb 04 21:21:26 IST 2025: ## USAID’s Future Uncertain After Musk Announces Shutdown, Rubio Calls for Reform

**Washington, D.C.** – The future of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) hangs in the balance after Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), announced its shutdown on Monday. However, Secretary of State Marco Rubio quickly clarified that the agency’s fate is not yet sealed.

Musk, citing discussions with President Trump, declared on X (formerly Twitter) that USAID would be dissolved. He described the agency, a major provider of US foreign aid, as “criminal.” While President Trump has yet to publicly comment, Rubio stressed the need for USAID to reform and align its operations with State Department policies and national interests.

Rubio, speaking in El Salvador, acknowledged that some USAID programs are beneficial, but criticized the agency’s perceived independence from the State Department’s policy directives. He emphasized that all foreign aid spending must directly serve US national interests and foreign policy goals.

The conflicting statements have created uncertainty. Earlier Monday, USAID headquarters staff received an email instructing them to work remotely, except for essential personnel. This followed an incident on Saturday where two USAID officials were removed after allegedly blocking DOGE officials from accessing agency facilities.

USAID, founded in the 1960s, is a significant player in global development, managing over half of US foreign assistance and boasting numerous partnerships worldwide, including a substantial presence in India. The extent of the agency’s current operations and the immediate impact of a potential shutdown remain unclear. The situation continues to develop, with the White House yet to offer a definitive statement on the matter.
