Mon Feb 03 18:39:28 UTC 2025: ## Modi to Visit US Amidst Trade Tensions, Following Trump’s Return to Power

**Washington D.C./New Delhi** – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit the United States on February 12th, sources within the Ministry of External Affairs have revealed. This trip would mark PM Modi’s first visit to the US since President Donald Trump’s return to office. The visit will follow a two-day trip to Paris for the Artificial Intelligence Action summit on February 10th and 11th.

PM Modi’s potential visit comes at a time of heightened trade tensions between India and the US. President Trump recently imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican imports and a 10% tax on Chinese goods, although the Mexican tariff was later suspended. These actions have raised concerns in India.

Despite these concerns, PM Modi and President Trump spoke by phone on January 27th, agreeing to foster a strong partnership focused on enhancing cooperation in trade, energy, and defense. The White House emphasized the importance of increased Indian procurement of US-made security equipment and a fairer bilateral trade relationship.

India’s interest in expanding energy ties with the US, particularly in clean energy, remains strong. This is underscored by India’s recent announcement to amend its nuclear liability law and establish a nuclear energy mission. These moves aim to overcome obstacles to implementing the historic civil nuclear deal signed 16 years ago and pave the way for potential cooperation with US firms like Holtec International on small modular reactors (SMRs). While no official announcement has been made regarding the US visit, PM Modi’s trip would make him one of the first foreign leaders to engage in bilateral talks with the Trump administration.
