**New Delhi, February 4, 2025** – The number of foreign companies registering in India has significantly declined in the past five years, according to data presented to the Rajya Sabha today. Minister of State for Corporate Affairs, Harsh Malhotra, revealed that only 339 foreign companies have been registered in India since 2020, a sharp decrease from previous years.
The figures show a steady downward trend: 90 companies registered in 2020, falling to 75 in 2021, 64 in 2022, 57 in 2023, and a mere 53 in 2024. So far in 2025, only five companies have registered – one each in Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, and Kerala, and two in Tamil Nadu.
Mr. Malhotra defined a foreign company under Section 2 (42) of the Companies Act, 2013, as any company incorporated outside India with a place of business within the country. He stated that these companies operate with foreign capital.
The minister also stated that the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) does not currently possess information on foreign companies conducting online activities without proper registration. The reasons behind the decline in registrations were not explicitly addressed in the statement.
