Tue Feb 04 04:09:47 IST 2025: ## Ecuadorian President Imposes Tariffs, Closes Borders Ahead of Tight Re-election Bid

**QUITO, Ecuador** – President Daniel Noboa announced a series of dramatic policy shifts Monday, just days before a crucial re-election bid, including a 27% tariff on Mexican imports and a three-day border closure. The moves, criticized by some as mirroring the policies of former US President Donald Trump, aim to project strength and address concerns about national security.

Noboa cited threats from armed groups as the reason for the temporary border closure, effective February 8-10. Simultaneously, he ordered the militarization of Ecuadorian ports to combat destabilization efforts. This comes amid a surge in violence from criminal groups, a challenge Noboa has struggled to address during his short term.

The 27% tariff on Mexican goods, justified as promoting domestic industry and ensuring fair treatment for Ecuadorian producers, echoes Trump’s past trade policies targeting Mexico. Noboa clarified that this is a temporary measure, pending the finalization of a free trade agreement with Mexico. Tensions between the two countries remain high following a controversial police raid on the Mexican embassy in Quito last year.

In a contrasting announcement, Noboa celebrated the successful negotiation of a free trade agreement with Canada, a significant economic achievement for his administration.

Polls show Noboa narrowly leading his rival, Luisa Gonzalez, in the upcoming election, but short of the majority needed to avoid a runoff. His presidency, inherited after the removal of Guillermo Lasso, is already facing challenges including escalating violence, energy shortages due to drought, and widespread criticism of his handling of the national crisis. The coming election will determine whether Noboa secures a full four-year term.
