Sun Feb 02 17:58:19 UTC 2025: ## Competing Claims Emerge After Deadly Attack on Ukrainian Boarding School
**Kyiv, Ukraine – February 2, 2025** – A deadly attack on a boarding school in the Russian-controlled city of Sudzha, Kursk region, has ignited a war of words between Ukraine and Russia, with each side blaming the other.
The Ukrainian General Staff reported four deaths and four serious injuries, stating that 84 people were rescued from the rubble. President Zelenskyy accused Moscow of bombing the school, which housed civilians preparing for evacuation. Injured individuals were transferred to Ukrainian medical facilities.
However, the Russian Ministry of Defense countered, alleging that Ukrainian forces launched a missile strike from the Sumy region.
Meanwhile, the death toll from a separate Russian missile strike on an apartment building in Poltava, Ukraine, climbed to 14, including two children. Seventeen more were injured. Overnight, Ukrainian officials reported that Russia launched 55 drones, with 40 destroyed and 13 likely jammed. A drone attack in the Kharkiv region wounded two.
Further casualties were reported across the conflict zone. Russia claimed that five Ukrainian drones were shot down over western Russia, while a man was killed in a drone strike in the Belgorod region. In Ukraine, five people were wounded when a Russian drone hit a bus in Kherson. Russia also claims that Ukrainian forces killed 22 people in an occupied village. These claims remain unverified. The escalating conflict continues to cause significant loss of life and displacement.
